First time telling someone...

Posted in Group:

So I got diagnosed HSV1 (genital) at the beginning of November, and I just decided to be celibate for a while so I wouldn't have to deal with the complications of starting a new relationship with someone when I had to explain having something....but I met this guy about 2 weeks ago, and we had a great first date, and so when he came over last night for our second date, I decided to tell him because we have really good chemistry and I didn't want to wait a long time to bring it up...So I spent a few days thinking over what I would say, I googled "how to tell someone you have herpes" and got some good tips (like say "i carry the Herpes virus" instead of "i have herpes"- sounds a lot better!). Anyways, we were about to go to dinner and I just decided to do it, so I told him to sit down and I managed, without crying or freaking out, to tell him that I had it, that I have only had 1 outbreak and that as long as we are careful it will be ok, and he totally WAS COOL WITH IT. His ex was in the same situation and he was like, we were just really careful and it was never an issue! I cannot believe how nice and supportive he was, especially since it was only our second date. I have been working out, eating healthy, and just generally taking care of myself and I haven't had another outbreak (my first was a week long and I was on vicodin the whole time because it hurt so bad). I want to encourage everyone to be optimistic about having to take that step and telling someone, it can be really scary but if the person is worthwhile and likes you, they will understand!

I was really really worried about having to tell someone, I went over it again and again in my head, how to say it in the most tactful possible way, how to not sound too clinical, etc, and i found this site: http://www.datingwithherpes.org/tellingsomeone/ which helped A LOT.

Marley that is awesome! Im so glad things went well & that he was open minded. My husband was afraid I would leave him when contracted it but to me it's just a bug you can't shake. I hope all goes well with your new interest.
